Installing CopyDoubler
--------------------
CopyDoubler requires System 7 or later to run. To install the demo version of CopyDoubler, drag it to the Control Panels folder and Restart. The Control Panels folder is located in the System Folder.
What is CopyDoubler?
--------------------
CopyDoubler dramatically improves operations in the System 7 Finder. CopyDoubler is integrated into the Finder and operates transparently to make copying and deleting files faster, safer and more convenient.
Here are CopyDoubler's major features:
• Copying files is at least twice as fast and emptying the Trash is up to ten times faster than the Finder.
• A Smart Replace feature copies only changed files. This feature can be used for incredibly fast backups. Using this feature can increase copying speed by 50 times.
• Copied files can be verified during copying to ensure they are identical to the originals. This adds an extra level of safety in case a disk is unreliable. (The Finder only verifies on floppy disks).
• Files put in the Trash can be erased completely before deleting to prevent unauthorized recovery with a file recovery program (This is an optional feature).
• Files compressed by AutoDoubler can be copied in compressed form or expanded when copying to selected types of disks.
Using CopyDoubler
-----------------
CopyDoubler is a Control Panel and is installed in the Control Panels folder. To take advantage of CopyDoubler, simply copy files and empty the Trash in the normal fashion. CopyDoubler’s progress display will appear in place of the Finder’s when copying files and emptying the Trash to let you know CopyDoubler is handling the operation.
Open the CopyDoubler control panel, located in the Control Panels folder by double-clicking it:
Changes to CopyDoubler’s settings take effect immediately—no restart is necessary. CopyDoubler’s two main functions, Fast Copy and Fast Empty Trash, can be turned on or off by clicking their respective checkboxes. When these items are checked, CopyDoubler will take over from the Finder. To change options for either of CopyDoubler’s functions, click on the appropriate Preferences button to show a Preferences dialog.
Setting the Fast Copy Preferences

Show Progress
-------------
Check Show Progress to display CopyDoubler's progress display when copying files. Here is a sample progress display:
If Show Progress is unchecked, an animated cursor will appear while copying to show that CopyDoubler is working.
Hint: Pressing and holding the Command key during a copy will show the progress dialog.
Default to Detailed Progress
-------------------------
Check this setting to show CopyDoubler’s larger, more detailed progress display immediately. The detailed progress estimates the time remaining for the copy, and displays individual throughput figures for reading, writing and verifying the copied files.
Hint: Clicking on the small triangle in the lower right corner of the small progress dialog will show the detailed version. (The detailed progress display, however, cannot be collapsed to the smaller one.)
Copy Finder Icons
---------------
Check this box to make CopyDoubler copy a file’s icons when making a copy. When copying a file to a different disk, a file’s icons may not already be on the destination disk and will need to be copied. Doing so is slow and not always necessary, if the disk containing the original file is still available on the Desktop. The Finder will look on all disks for a file’s icon before giving up and displaying a generic icon. Checking the Copy Finder Icons option will check to see if a file’s icons have already been copied, and, if not, copy them to the destination disk. Copying the icons will decrease copy performance because of the overhead of checking for the existence of each file’s icons.
Note: Not copying a file’s icons does not in any way affect the contents of the file, nor is the file’s icon “lost” in any way. Rebuilding a disk’s Desktop file will force the Finder to copy the icons out of the creating application, where they are permanently stored. Refer to Appendix A for more details.
Verify Disk Writes
-----------------
This is an added safety feature that guarantees that the copied file(s) are identical to the original file(s). Generally, verification is needed only on floppy disks and removable disks and not on hard disks. However, if you suspect that a disk is not working properly, you may wish to turn on verification for all disks. The only penalty in doing so is speed—copying with verification turned on takes about 50% longer than without.
The pop-up menu to the right of the checkbox selects the type of disks on which file verification should be done:
Note: Without CopyDoubler, the Finder verifies on floppy disks only.
Expand Files When Copying To
--------------------------
Check this box to expand AutoDoubler–compressed files automatically during a copy. You may want to use this option if, for example, you’re copying files to floppy disks to give to a friend. If the files are compressed by AutoDoubler, you won’t have to worry about copying a file the friend can’t expand. This option is only available if AutoDoubler is installed. The pop-up menu to the right of the checkbox selects the type of disk on which copied files will be expanded: floppies, floppies and removables or all disks. Unchecking this option will tell CopyDoubler to copy all AutoDoubler compressed files in compressed form.
Hint: Holding down the Control key while initiating a copy will reverse this setting, i.e., if CopyDoubler was going to copy in expanded form and the Control key is down, then CopyDoubler will copy in compressed form. The Control key can be released once the CopyDoubler progress display or animated cursor appears.
Setting the Empty Trash Preferences

Show Progress
-------------
Check this box to show the progress display when emptying the Trash.
Note: The dialog will not show if emptying the trash takes only a few seconds.
Hint: Holding down the Command key while emptying the Trash will show the progress dialog.
Always Delete Locked files
------------------------
Normally you may not delete locked files unless you unlock them first. To allow deletion of locked files, check this option.
Hint: With or without CopyDoubler, holding down the Option key while emptying the Trash will always delete locked files.
Security Erase
-------------
To completely erase files in the Trash before deleting them, check this option.
Normally, when the Macintosh deletes a file, the file’s contents aren’t actually erased. That is because deleting a file simply removes its entry from the disk’s list of files, but leaves the file’s contents intact. Some programs count on this to recover or "undelete" files.
If files contain confidential information, it is undesirable for someone to be able to recover them. Deleting files with Security Erase turned on will take longer because the files have to be overwritten before they are deleted.
Hint: Holding down the Control key while emptying the Trash will perform a Security Erase.
Smart Replace
-------------
When copying and replacing more than a single file, you are automatically offered the option of replacing all files in the destination or doing a Smart Replace:
Smart Replace produces an identical result to Replace, but copies only those files that have changed. A file is considered changed if its size, type, creator, creation date, modification date, compressed status or Finder information has changed.
This option is a big time-saver if you regularly copy the same folder to your disk from somewhere else. It is also useful to synchronize folders on two different computers, such as a PowerBook and a desktop Macintosh.
